Gretchen Reynolds of the New York Times wrote a lovely piece on an amazing 105 year old who set a cycling record this year.
His name is Robert Marchand. The remarkable french man participated in a study by Dr. Veronique Billat, a professor of exercise science at the University of Evry-Val d'Essonne in France.
Dr. Billat's hope was to see if humans had the ability to improve aerobic abilities as centenarians.
She studied this by examining Marchand's VO2max which is the body's ability to take in oxygen. Marchand already had a VO2max comparable to someone half his age, but could it improve at 105?
The answer is YES!!!
In Dr. Billat's study Marchand followed a specific training program for two years, then was retested. His results - 13% increased in VO2max and a 40% increase in pedaling power.
That's an amazing improvement even if you are not in your 100's!!!
So the moral of the story... IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO RECREATE YOURSELF!!!
