A 2015 study demonstrated that fitness not only helps keep your body in shape, it keeps your brain fit too.
Agnieszka Burzynska led the study which looked at 100 adults between the ages of 60 and 80 and monitored their physical activity for over a week. The research team used functional MRI to study the brain activity of each participant.
The conclusions from the study were that the more active adults had greater "moment-to-moment fluctuations" in brain activity which is linked to performing better on complex cognitive tasks, such as memory and intelligence tests. Increased physical activity creates greater blood flow to the brain which brings more oxygen and keeps the brain healthy and young.
So, if you are at all concerned about losing your memory or falling victim to one of the many cognitive diseases that plague many older adults - get up and MOVE!!!
