As the old saying goes, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," but what about older people? There may be some dog trainers out there that may argue the point that you can actually teach old dogs new tricks as well, but with humans it is a sure fact that we can learn new tricks as we age.
The American Psychological Association writes "Contrary to its reputation as a slower, duller version of a youthful brain, it seems that the middle-aged mind not only maintains many of its abilities of youth but actually acquires some new ones." (1)
They also state that even though there is a decline in memorization and speed, verbal, math, abstract reasoning and many other skills actually improve as we age.
You may have heard of the term Neuroplasticity or Neurogenesis; these refer to the new scientific findings that we can actually grow new neurons and maintain the health of our brain with proper training.
So get out there and learn something new - a new hobby, a new skill, a new language - exercise your brain and it will continue to work for you!
